Winzer Sommerach - Die Genossenschaft

Winzer Sommerach (Sommerach, Fränkisches Weinland)

The Winzerkeller (winemakers’ cellar) has been located at Katzenkopf in Sommerach since 1901 and has also had its Weinreich (wine kingdom) since 2006. In 2011, the summer bar, a wine bar sheltered from the wind with outdoor seating, was added. The modern presentation rooms of the Weinreich have been inserted into a warehouse from the 1970s. On Nordheimer Strasse, the building faces the old town with a monumental basilica facade, originally layered from field and house stones to form a powerful surface relief.

At night, it seems to come to life as the blind windows set into the façade become bottle-green, like cat's bright green eyes, irresistibly attracting visitors. On the remaining three sides of the building, the former warehouse was covered with Italian sand plaster, which seems to take on a different surface texture and color depending on the position of the sun. The valeurs range from grayish violet to Bordeaux and summer evening red. The entrance area to the Weinreich is designed as a post-and-beam construction in which a two-story portal with a floor-to-ceiling skylight is set. In front of it hovers the winegrower patron Urban, a silhouette made of sheet steel. All seating areas near the building and inside are framed with small vineyard meadows and invite you to linger with the furniture recycled from old stock, which has a natural patina. The basement, ground floor and attic, where the wine school is located, are connected by concrete box staircases that can give the impression that you are dealing with small vineyard cottages. A walk through the world of wine experience in the Weinreich ideally begins at the "KostBar" and ends after a descent into the festively staged barrique cellar with a walk back to the school desk. Because in the wine school, every year many hundreds of learned wine students like to do lap of honor.
