WeinKulturGaden (Thüngersheim, Fränkisches Weinland)

The WeinKulturGaden is located in the Kirchgasse in the middle of the historic old town of Thüngersheim in the district of Würzburg. With around 270 hectares / 1.04 square mile of vineyards, Thüngersheim is one of the largest wine-growing communities in Franconia. The Gaden are witnesses to an eventful past. They were built in 1429/30 and the term 'Gaden' is derived from the Old High German 'gadam' or 'gadum'. This was the name given to a house that only had a single room. The gaden were part of a defensive complex with the church in the center. The vital possessions of the community were stored here. For many years, the six church barns, some of which were medieval, stood empty and were left to decay. New initiatives to revitalize and enhance the old town of Thüngersheim made it possible to recognize the unused potential of the listed buildings and to think about a renovation and conversion concept. The WeinKulturGaden consist of six arcades, each dedicated to a different theme. The large gate of the KulturGaden invites visitors to explore the WeinGaden and the KunstGaden from here. A metal wall band guides visitors through the interior of the rooms, which in turn are connected to each other by stairs and walkways. Only the DenkmalGaden and the EnergieGaden can be entered through separate entrances. The aim was to make the Gaden accessible to the general public and fill them with life through culture and art.
