The Schwanenwirtschaft was rebuilt near the Sommerach Gate in Volkach in 1404 with the Schwan family being the name giver. In the first third of the nineteenth century, however, the inn appeared to be in a state of disrepair. In the early 1930s, the winegrower Josef Pfaff took matters into hand and rented the Schwanen inn from the owner. Eventually, he was able to purchase the property in 1934 and from then on managed it together with his wife Maria. In 1973, Michael and Petra Pfaff joined the second generation of the family, and led the house successfully to top gastronomy and hotel business acclaim until 1997. Since 1997, the fate of the family business has been in the hands of Eva Pfaff and her husband Ralph Düker.
In 2011, they were able to set up a new reception with vinotheque in the neighboring property of the historic Schwanen-Wirtschaft. The building with its beautiful wine-themed room, has belonged to the medium-sized hotelier association of Romantik-Hotels since 1980. For the Weingut zur Schwane, which cultivated about nine hectares of vineyards until 1997, it became too cramped in the old town of Volkach, especially after the young oenologist Eva Pfaff-Düker massively expanded after taking over the family business. The vineyards were increased to 25 hectares. The Großes Gewächse were planted in the Escherndorfer Lump and Volkacher Ratsherr sites. In 2002, the company finally moved into its new winery at Erlachhof 7. From the very beginning, a spacious vinotheque had been set up there, so that larger groups could also be catered for in the best possible way. The new building was awarded an architecture prize in 2003, and what the jury said about the building at the time is still true. It was unobtrusively composed into the landscape and, with its swan-white exterior plastering, lives up to its name.
