Weingut Rothe

Weingut Rothe (Nordheim a.Main, Fränkisches Weinland)

Until 2002, Manfred Rothe farmed his vineyards on the Mainschleifen slopes as a side business; since then, he has become a full-time winemaker. He can now pursue his philosophy of giving more time and attention to things. As an organic vintner, vegan wines have long been a matter close to Rothe's heart and he is convinced that the demand for vegan wines, which do not contain any additives of animal origin, will increase significantly in the near future.

Although Rothe does not use gelatin, he is still able to bottle bright wines. Filtration with layers of cellulose just before filling makes it possible to avoid using gelatin. Producing vegan wines, says Rothe, is not more expensive; on the contrary, as something is taken out. However, such a process is more time-consuming. Anyone who lives by the motto "time is money" has already lost as a wine connoisseur, that much is certain. Manfred Rothe also tends to be conservative when it comes to the yields from his vines. His thirty or even forty-year-old vines are the basis of the top growths, he explains. Thus, the wines of the "Grande" line all come from yield-reduced plants. For the red varieties, which are completely fermented and matured in wood for twelve months, Rothe relies on the classics Domina, Schwarzriesling and Pinot Noir. His architect wife Christine is responsible for the pleasant atmosphere in the new vinotheque which she furnished and designed with very few, but high-quality materials. The ambience of the vinotheque, which opened in 2013, is straightforward and uncluttered. The wines are elegantly presented in this new building and expertly explained by Christine and Manfred Rothe. You can also take a look around the vineyards as part of themed hikes and wine experience tours together with wine enthusiast Manfred Rothe and his daughter Maria, who is a guide in wine experience.
