Weingut Rainer Sauer

Weingut Rainer Sauer (Volkach, Fränkisches Weinland)

Completed in 2015, the winegrowing family Rainer Sauer erected a characterful and stylish modern vinotheque in the former family home which had been standing empty. It's a must visit if you are in Escherndorf for the wine. The historic brickwork has been exposed, cleaned and completed. The floor slab is cast from matt polished terrazzo and the bracing of the historic vintner's house is done with a concrete ring anchor. The massive counters in the vinotheque grow out of the floor like altar tables, and the bar tables and benches rest on hand-forged bridges. However, the lighting setting is reverent. Ceilings and gable walls are insulated so that a large number of visitors do not disturb each other when they devote themselves to the delicious sour wines during lively conversation. An office workstation is separated from the common area behind a row of vines made of forged rods.

This row of vines leads up the stairs to the upper floor of the former winegrower's residence and into the large hosting space, which is open all the way to the ridge. You will pass by the family's very private treasure chamber. What does the winegrower himself drink? You can see it here - but you can't touch it. From the large hall on the upper floor, the view through the former attic windows is drawn out to the steep slopes above Escherndorf, and the forged row of vines seems to want to show the viewer the way there right from the start. The ceiling shell is covered with felt to ensure good sound insulation. The wall on the opposite end of the hall answers to the gable facing Bocksbeutelstraße with a wall-high collage reflecting life and work in the vineyard back into the house. In the staircase, the arduous ascent up the steep slopes near Escherndorf is metaphorically traced. Passing under a mighty ball of sunlight and accompanied by drops of light, one ascends the vineyard along vines and in view of the soil formations given on site. These are recreated in the wall design of the staircase with natural materials.
