terroir f Ramsthal

Busy wine history

Whoever walks through the Franconian vineyards today will usually find the "pure set" there: Only one grape variety grows on each slope. In the past, however, this was different and for centuries the winegrowers planted and cultivated the "Gemischter Satz" (mixed set), also called "Alter Satz" (old set). Up to ten different grape varieties were planted in jumble, which gave the vineyard more qualitative and quantitative stability under the often much harsher climatic conditions of the past - today, the grape varieties thus preserved also serve as a "gene reservoir" for wine breeding.

Such an "Alter Satz" has become rare, but it still exists: as, for example, at terroir f in Ramsthal. Here, the striking red stelae are dedicated to the history of the grape varieties. At the same time, their architecture cleverly incorporates yet another special feature of Franconian viticulture: the historic three-pole training, with which vintners mastered "stubborn shoots" and "drifting knots" in pure manual labor.
